Business is not just about making money, it is also a way to achieve peace through respect for human rights and social responsibility, Fr. Oliver Williams, a member of the board of directors of the United Nations Global Compact Foundation, said yesterday.

Williams was in Bacolod City to talk on “Peace through Commerce: The Global Corporate Role in Promoting More Peaceful Societies” at the University of St. La Salle.

He said that aside from making money, doing business must have a common goal and that is to create jobs, wealth, and improve the management skills of its workers.

LGUs reminded to
renew grain licenses

Negros Occidental manager Procopio Trabajo of the National Food Authority III yesterday reminded grain retailers and wholesalers seven local government units to renew their licenses this month.

LGUs included are Bago City, Hinigaran, San Enrique, Pontevedra, and Pulupandan, Trabajo said.

He also said they scheduled the renewal of NFA licenses to regulate payments and for retailers and wholesalers to avoid penalties.

Peso alleviating oil rate hikes
but not enough, Petilla says

Strengthening of the Philippine peso is helping curb domestic oil price increases but the current strength of the local unit is not enough to totally prevent oil price hike, Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla said yesterday.

Petilla said the depreciation of the peso also impacts on oil prices and since the path of oil prices continue to go up “we simply follow the world prices.”

“It’s not enough to offset the demand and the movement of world oil prices. It could have been worse if the peso is depreciating against the dollar but it helps right now,” he said.
