1 killed, 5 hurt
in road mishap
A teenager was killed and five were hurt when the tricycle they were riding collided with a government ambulance at Crossing Pulupandan in Brgy. Mabini, Valladolid town, Negros Occidental, yesterday.
Tricycle driver Michael Ruiz, 19, of Brgy. Poblacion, Bago City, was injured and was rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Other passengers injured were John Dexter Trayco, 22, Jesseren dela Peña, 18, Sorelyn Medalla, 17, Leizel Villacorta, 16 and Princess Ramos, 17, all of Bago City. They were treated at the same hospital.
Efren Millan, 59, of Ilog and the driver of the ambulance owned by the Ilog town, surrendered to the police after the accident, but was brought to the CLMMRH for erratic blood pressure.
Investigation conducted by Police Officer 3 Jolito Oebanda showed that both vehicles were heading north of the road when the accident happened.
In a television interview, Trayco said they were turning left when the ambulance suddenly overtook them, hitting the side of the tricycle. He also said the tricycle driver probably did not notice the ambulance because its siren was not on.
Meanwhile, Millan said he tried to apply his brakes when the tricycle suddenly crossed their path but it was too late.
Roberto Ruiz, Michael’s father, admitted that his son did not have a driver’s license.*APN back

2 ‘robbers’ nabbed
in shoot-out
Two suspected robbers were arrested after a shoot-out in Brgy. 14, Bacolod City, at about 4 p.m. Tuesday, Station 1 commander, Chief Insp. Danilo Francisco, said yesterday.
Francisco said Alex Camingawan, 23, and Cyrus Magbanua, 30, both of Purok Boulevard, Brgy. 14, Bacolod, were arrested by the team of Police Officer 1 Rolly Jardinico when they held up a lending collector at the Bacolod downtown area past 3 p.m.
Julian Cabilin, 22, of Sitio Lumboy in Brgy. Villamonte, Bacolod, and employed by the JJ Lending Creditors told the police that the suspects, who were on board a motorcycle, blocked his way and held him up at gun point.
Cabilin said Magbanua and Camingawan took his P15,000 in cash and cellular phone valued at P1,000 and fled on a motorcycle.
Cabilin immediately went to Police Station 1 to report the incident, and policemen launched a follow-up operation.
While patrolling the area of Purok Boulevard, the policemen saw two men on a motorcycle who fitted Cabilin’s description of those who held him up, Francisco said.
When the men, who were later identified to be Camingawan and Magbanua, saw the policemen tailing them, they sped up their motorcycle and Camingawan fired at them, Francisco said.
However, the suspects gave up when Magbanua’s gun ran out of bullets, he said.
A plastic sachet of suspected shabu was seized from Magbanua but his gun was not recovered because he threw it away before he and Camingawan surrendered, police reports showed.
Investigation showed that Magbanua has an arrest warrant for theft issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 62 Judge Frances Guanzon, who denied him bail.
Meanwhile, Bacolod City Police officer-in-charge, Senior Supt. Edgardo Ordaniel, yesterday said a six-man tracker team has been formed to address robbery and theft incidents perpetrated by men riding in tandem on motorcycles.
Ordaniel said the team will be led by Chief Insp. Ulysses Ortiz, and will be in addition to his present position as head of the Bacolod City Police Investigation and Detective Management Branch.*APN back
