BJMP NegOr to construct
tuberculosis infirmaries
BY RENE GENOVE

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Negros Oriental has secured a half-million-peso assistance from the Department of Health for the construction of anti-tuberculosis infirmaries in the province.

Jail Chief Insp. Rosalina Malahay, BJMP provincial administrator, said the increase of tuberculosis cases in district jails had facilitated the assistance.

Of the P500,000, Dumaguete and Bais cities will receive P200,000 each, and Guihulngan City will get P100,000, she said.

Malahay said she hopes the construction of treatment rooms will help control the spread of TB.

CEBU – A Canadian involved in legal disputes with his neighbors shot dead two people yesterday in a courtroom rampage here before killing himself, police said.

John Pope, 66, a former journalist, arrived with two hidden pistols at a courtroom that was hearing a case against him for "mischief", said Senior Superintendent Mariano Natuel, police chief of Cebu city.

Pope, who had been living in Cebu for 10 years, shot and killed Dr. Rene Rafols, and lawyer Julian Atias, at past 8 a.m. inside the courtroom of Municipal Trial Court in Cities Judge Anatalio Necesario.

Disaster readiness
training conducted

A training program on community disaster preparedness was conducted by the Corporate Network for Disaster Response and Smart Communications Inc., in Barangay Candau-ay, Dumaguete City recently, a press release from the company said.

Candau-ay was one of the barangays hardest hit by typhoon Sendong in 2011, and is the latest host community for the Noah’s Ark Project of CNDR.

Around 35 barangay and purok officials and health workers participated in the workshop at the Dumaguete septage treatment facility in Barangay Camanjac, from January 8-10, the press release said.
