Home players dominate
Cadiz City badminton tilt

Local badminton players from the host Cadiz dominated the 1st 2013 Mayor Patrick G. Escalante Badminton Cup held at the multi-purpose hall in Negros Occidental.

Winners for Cadiz were Kerr Longno in the boys’ single under-15, with Kenneth Caracena taking the silver medal. Longno and Caracena tandem also won for them the gold in the boys’ double under-15.

Cadiz City’s Clarence Villaflor dominated the boy’s single under-9 over Trinity Christian School Lui France Lomugdang and teamed up with Paul Saturinas to bag the title in the same category for boys’ double.

Sharapova sets up
showdown with Li

Maria Sharapova set up an Australian Open showdown with China's Li Na Tuesday as she roared into the semi-finals for the record loss of only nine games.

The world number two swamped her latest victim, fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-2 in a quickfire 1hr 6min, continuing her blistering start to the season.

Sharapova was forced to pull out of her warm-up tournament with injury, hitting up with Australian junior boys instead, but she has been remorseless in her rampage to the last four at Melbourne Park.

Bradford within
sight of Wembley

Aston Villa must overturn a 3-1 deficit in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final on Tuesday if they are to avoid becoming the latest team to fall to giant-killers Bradford City.

Fourth-tier Bradford have already accounted for Arsenal and Wigan Athletic in this season's competition and their shock 3-1 win at home to Villa on January 8 took them to within 90 minutes of a first final appearance in 102 years.

FA Cup winners in 1911, Bradford are bidding to become the first side from England's fourth tier to reach a major final since Rochdale lost to Norwich City over two legs in the 1962 League Cup final.
