Police warn public vs.
NPA checkpoints

BY GILBERT BAYORAN

The Philippine National Police yesterday warned the public, especially motorists, of possible checkpoint operations that may be conducted by the New People’s Army in Western Visayas.

Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz, regional police director, issued the warning, following the checkpoint operations of the NPA in Compostela Valley, where an Army soldier and policemen were intercepted, disarmed, and taken as prisoners.

Rigoberto Sanchez, a spokesman for the New People’s Army, confirmed in a statement, that they are holding Private First Class Jesrel Colanggo, a member of the 60th Infantry Battalion, and Senior Police Officer 1 Ruel Pasion.

Even during the election period, there were reports of checkpoint operations being conducted by the NPA, Cruz added.

Cruz said NPA members usually wear military camouflage uniforms and have companions in civilian clothes.

Under Comelec resolution 9588, at least one checkpoint must be set up in each city and municipality. It shall have a signboard with a size of 3 feet by 4 feet to clearly identify the place as Comelec checkpoint from afar.

Policemen and military personnel manning the checkpoints are required to be in complete uniform. They must also be courteous in approaching motorists and observe the ‘plain view’ doctrine.

Cruz said there are still areas of Region 6 affected by the insurgency problem. “ We should be vigilant and be aware of the signs of government checkpoints,” he added.

Cruz also reminded the public to immediately report to the nearest police unit, in case they are doubtful about the checkpoints. * GPB
