It could be anybody’s ballgame as far as this year’s UAAP basketball crown is concerned as Far Eastern University Tamaraws and the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers drew first blood against University of the East Red Warriors and De la Salle University Green Archers in the opening doubleheader Saturday in Manila.
It was a come-from-behind 89-78 win for the Tamaraws in the first game, while UST beat La Salle, 63-58, in overtime.
In taming Red Warriors, the Tamaraws unleashed a barrage of triples and converted several fastbreaks in the fastbreak to make up for a slow start.
The third quarter rally by the FEU was lead by shooting guard Terrence Romeo, backstopped by Anthony Hargrove.
Meanwhile, UST opened its bid for another appearance in the finals this year with a big win against DLSU.
The Growling Tigers got a double-double output from Karim Abdul, who scored 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Jeric Teng tallied 23 points, six rebounds and three steals.
The Tigers controlled the defensive end of the game by forcing 24 turnovers and limiting Green Archers’ top gunner Jeron Teng to 10 points.*with a report from PNA
