Four farmers and a fisheries organization from Negros Occidental bagged the major awards yesterday at the 2013 Regional Gawad Saka Award of the Department of Agriculture in Region 6 at the Sarabia Manor Hotel in Iloilo City.
Elenita Alarcon and John Eric Bernabe, both from Silay City, were named outstanding sugarcane and high-value crops farmers of the year, respectively.
Other awardees from Negros Occidental were Renato Catiempo of Bago City as best organic farmer, Reynaldo Espanola of Isabela town as outstanding corn farmer and the Sipalay Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council of Sipalay as outstanding FARMC.



NEDA pegs Q2 GDP
growth at 7.5%
The Philippine economy may have grown robust over 7.5 percent in the second quarter of 2013 despite slower trade performance, as other key domestic sectors continued to pick up speed, according to the country’s chief economic planner.
“It (at least 7.5 percent growth) is within the range of possibilities. I think it is quite going to be robust because so far, all the indicators are quite positive,” Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan told reporters on the sidelines of the launching of the 2012/2013 Philippine Human Development Report yesterday.
Balisacan expected manufacturing and construction, key growth drivers in the second quarter, continued.


Toyota to showcase
2 concept vehicles
Toyota Motor Philippines will bring in two concept cars to the country Thursday, a press release from TMP said.
These vehicles that will give the public a glimpse of how cars will be in the near future will be exhibited at The World of Toyota Motorshow on August 10–18 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.
Toyota’s FCV-R and Lexus’s LF-LC will show the brand’s new design philosophy and technology of cars in the future, the press release said.
