Quake hurts 10

MANILA – A 5.7 quake shook parts of  Mindanao  late Saturday, injuring at least 10 people and causing minor damage to structures, officials said yesterday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said yesterday the quake struck near the town of Carmen on Mindanao, shaking people awake and causing panic.

It was felt in varying intensities across eight nearby towns and cities, according to the regional civil defense office.

At least 10 people were hurt due to falling debris, while 46 houses made from light materials in remote rural areas were partially damaged, the civil defense office said.

Walls in five school buildings were found to have cracked but were deemed stable for students returning to school today after the summer holiday, regional civil defense officer Carlo Daminay said.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.*AFP
