40 nabbed for gambling
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

The number of arrested violators of the illegal gambling law in Negros Occidental rose to 40 , with the apprehension of seven more suspects Friday in Silay City, Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, provincial police officer-in-charge, said.

Members of the Regional Intelligence Unit 6 arrested Friday seven suspects in Brgy. Mambulac, Silay City, who were caught in the act of operating illegal numbers game, locally known as STL Bookies, in coordination with the local police headed by Supt. Rosauro Francisco.

Arrested were Dave Rolendo, BonJovi Rojo, Resmundo Villaruel, Bene Gamboa, Rachel Panisa, Hiawatha Guillergan and Francisco Tano, all residents of Silay City.

De la Paz said their arrest brought to 40 the number of violators apprehended in two weeks of sustained anti-illegal gambling operations in the province, in compliance with the order of Gov. Alfredo Maranon Jr. to stop illegal gambling operations.

Recovered from the arrested suspects were P1,000 in cash, a RUSI DL-Z125 motorcycle, assorted illegal gambling paraphernalia, and three cellular phones, among others.

In his report to de la Paz, Francisco said a certain Reymund Catedral operates the STTL Bookies with Geraldine Sabile acting as the manager. The seven arrested suspects are now in jail.

De la Paz said the court usually recommends P16,000 bail for those arrested for illegal gambling, with a higher amount set for repeat offenders.

Marañon had earlier ordered the police to also arrest financiers and operators of illegal gambling.

De la Paz said they have received reports that some operators of illegal gambling, especially in northern Negros, have temporarily stopped their operations, because of their no let-up operations against them.*GPB
