Mayor orders crackdown
again on ambulant vendors
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria has ordered the Task Force SAGARR, or Special Action Group Advocating Rapid Reforms, to enforce the law against ambulant vendors without let up.

Sagarbarria, who met with the task force Thursday, admitted there is no other solution to the perennial problem of ambulant vendors but to apprehend them, if the city could not find a place for them.

He said many of the vendors come from places outside Dumaguete and the city has to protect the legitimate businesses.

The illegal drugs problem in Dumaguete City is expected to rise with the opening of classes, police chief Supt. James Goforth said yesterday.

Police operations against the illegal drugs continue without let-up, in coordination with the local Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and other Philippine National Police units, Goforth also said.

In fact, there had been several drug-related apprehensions in the city but he could not give specific data.

Silliman University in Dumaguete City has announced that three electric golf carts are in full operation for school year 2013-2014, and will offer free transportation to students, faculty, staff and alumni around the university’s 62-hectare campus.

The electric golf carts were donated by alumni chapters in the United States. Two came from the SU Alumni Association of Southern California and the other from the SUAA International-Chicago, a press release from the school said.

The units arrived in December last year and have been slightly improved.
