DOST opens scholarships

The Department of Science and Technology in Negros Occidental is accepting applicants for undergraduate scholarship programs for students with high aptitude in science and mathematics, DOST Provincial Director Alan Francis Daraug, said yesterday.

Daraug said the scholarship is open to talented and deserving students who belong to the top five percent of their regular high school graduating class, or a member of the graduating class of a Department of Education-recognized science high school.

He said applicants will be divided into those whose family’s gross annual income is above P153,600 and those whose family earnings are below that.

Under the scholarship program of DOST, qualified applicants with a family gross annual income below P153,600, will receive P8,000 in tuition and school fees P5,000 book allowance annually, P5,000 monthly living allowance, P1,500 summer allowance and P1,000 post-graduation clothing allowance.

Qualified applicants whose family annual income is above P153,600 will also receive the same grants, but their monthly living allowance will be given partially.

If admitted, scholars can enroll un courses like agriculture, applied mathematics, applied physics, biochemistry, biology, engineering, environmental science, fisheries, food technology, forestry, geology and mathematics teaching, among others.

He said, applicants in the province can enroll in different state colleges and universities although they can also enroll at the University of St. La Salle and University of Negros Occidental Recoletos.

The courses they can take up at UNO-R and USLS, however, are only be electronics communications, mechanical and computer engineering, Daraug stressed.

Those interested may secure application forms from the DOST-Negros Occidental Province at Cottage Road Bacolod City. The deadline for submission of other requirements is August 23, 2013.

The entrance examination is slated on September 22 at the Technological University of the Philippines-Visayas in Talisay City for residents of the third and fourth districts and Bacolod City, while the venues for applicants from first, second, fifth and sixth districts are yet to be announced.
