‘Slain bizman tagged
in murder of lawyer’

Police investigators are looking at potential motives in the killing at around 6 a.m. Sunday of a businessman earlier tagged as the alleged mastermind in the murder of a lawyer two years ago, also in Dumaguete City.

Supt. James Goforth, Dumaguete Police chief, identified the fatality as Alan Laurente, 43, a used car dealer and proprietor of the Virgo Motors in Sibulan, Negros Oriental.

He said one of the leads they were pursuing was the victim’s business involving the buying and selling of secondhand vehicles, some of which were discovered to be “hot cars”, for which cases against him are now pending in court.

The five policemen who failed to appear for investigation proceedings maybe meted sanctions, Special Investigator Jess Cañete of the Commission on Human Rights in Negros Oriental said yesterday.

Supt. Reynold Andot Sr., Inspectors Alvin Futalan and Richmond Conag, Senior Police Office 4 Blas Alpeche, and SPO1 Anthony Sun were subpoenaed but did not appear before the CHR office in Dumaguete City yesterday morning to help identify the man in a video footage receiving “tong”, or commission, from operators of panchong, a Chinese gambling game using dominoes.

A civilian, identified as Ronald Pineda, allegedly claimed to be the personal driver of PNP OIC provincial police director, Senior Supt. Noli Romana, who has denied it.

Losing senatorial bets

MANILA – Spending huge amount of money does not guarantee that one will win in the elections.

Based on the list of Statements of Contributions and Expenditures of all winning and losing senatorial candidates in the May 13, 2010 elections, Juan Ponce Enrile Jr., who was in 15th place with 11,543,024 votes in the senatorial race, received the highest amount of contribution with P150,797,918.18 million and spent a total of P150.40 million.

Senator Jamby Madrigal, who also did not make it, spent a total of P39.13 million from her personal funds during the campaign. Her SECE said that she did not receive any contributions.
