43 bets expected at
covenant signing

Forty-three candidates for congressional and provincial seats in Negros Occidental are expected to sign a covenant for peaceful elections at the San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod City at noon today.

The covenant signing is being initiated by the Philippine National Police and the Commission on Elections.

The candidates on the COMELEC list are Genaro Alvarez Jr. (Nationalist Peoples Coalition) and Alfredo Marañon Jr. (United Negros Alliance) for governor; and Melvin Ibañez (UNA) and Eugenio Lacson (NPC) for vice governor.

The candidates for provincial board seats are Dick Dedicatoria (PMP/UNA), Rene Gustilo (LP), Rolando Ponsica (NPC) and Joma Valmayor (PMP/UNA) – first district; Ely Joy Barredo (NPC), RSB Baterna (Independent), Bading Escalante (UNA), Leonardo Magbanua (NPC) and Miller Serondo (UNA) – second district;

Joemarie Astorga (PDP), Johnna Ko (NPC), Patrick Leonard Lacson (UNA) and Edwin Velez (UNA) – third district; Joeben Alonso (NPC/UNA), Art Alvarez (Independent), Ramon Gonzaga Jr. (Independent) and Victor Javellana (NPC) – fourth district; Len Gatuslao (LP), Renato Malabor (NPC), Francis Gerard Tuvilla (UNA) and Janet Villafranca (NPC) – fifth district; and Ted Romulo del Rio (UNA), Helen Zafra (NPC) and Pedro Zayco Jr. (NPC) – sixth district.

The candidates running for congressional seats are: Nene de la Cruz (PMP/UNA), Jules Ledesma (NPC), Toto Librando (AKSYON) and Leopoldo Sua (Independent) – first district; Bebo Cueva (NUP/UNA) and Otil Galilea (NPC) – second district;

Albee Benitez (LP) and Kako Lacson (Lakas - CMD) – third district; Ike Barredo (Independent), Leonardo Erobas (Independent) and Jeffrey Ferrer (UNA); Alejandro Mirasol (LP) and Dino Yulo (NP) – fifth district; and Mercedes Alvarez (NPC) and Philip Arles (NUP) – sixth district.

Marañon said he is attending the signing of the covenant, while Alvarez said he was not certain if he would attend the rites as he was not sure if he will be in Bacolod.

Alvarez said even without the covenant, the elections in Negros Occidental will be peaceful.*CPG
