The Physical Therapy Department of the Riverside College in Bacolod City launched its new dual sex anatomy model at its PT laboratory yesterday.
Riverside College president Samuel Lee, who was at the launching yesterday, said their school is the only one in Negros Occidental that offers a PT program. Investing in its facilities is one of their ways to improve their teaching, he said.
Lee said they are also investing in the expansion of their PT laboratory to provide a wider space for students to learn and apply their skills and knowledge.
He said their acquisition of the anatomical dummy is beneficial to their educators and students as it is a necessary training device that gives them graphic input to improve their knowledge and competence as health care providers.
The P400,000 new dual sex anatomy model that stands 4 1/2 feet tall shows deep and superficial musculature, Dr. Jair Kimri Jingco, dean of the PT department, said. The body’s major nerves, vessels, tissues and organs are also shown in delicate detail.
Jingco said the model has removable organs and interchangeable genital inserts with over 600 vital structures that are hand-numbered for easy identification using a detailed product manual. It is hand-painted and is mounted on a convenient roller base, he added.
The pioneer batch of the PT Department is now on its second year, after they had their last batch of graduates in 2007, Jingco said. They now have 160 students enrolled.
PT is a five-year course where students spend four years of academic learning and a one-year clinical internship.
The department also launched the “Name the Dummy Contest” that is open to all high school graduating students who have taken their entrance exam, Rowena Gayatin, marketing assistant for PT said. The contest is open until March 31 and they will award the winner on April 1 with a P3,000 cash prize, she added.
The entries will be judged by Lee, Jingco, and Agnes Sariego of the External Affairs Management of Riverside College. *LTG
