Doc gets Rizal award

Dr. Erlinda De los Reyes, governor of Philippine Medical Association in Western Visayas, was awarded the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Memorial Awards in Community Leadership during the 106thPMA Annual Convention in Manila Hotel on May 17.

Earlier, De los Reyes, an anesthesiologist from Bacolod City, had been adjudged by the Auxiliary to the Philippine Medical Association as one of the five TOPICS (Outstanding Physician in Community Service) awardees during the 30th TOPICS Awarding Ceremonies at the Unilab Bayanihan Center in Pasic City in celebration of the 34th Physician’s Day in September.

The Dr. Jose P. Rizal award is the highest award given to outstanding Filipino physicians whose lives and works reflect the ideals of Rizal in their profession and practice, in their love of fellowmen, the country and God, De los Reyes said in a press release.

Initiated by the Southern Tagalog Association of Medical Practitioners in 1987, the award hopes to inspire physicians and non-physicians to perpetuate the memory and legacy of Rizal, it said.

Out of five finalists in five categories: Government Service, Academe, Community Leadership, Clinical Practice and Research, only three were declared winners namely, De los Reyes in Community Leadership,Dr. Rodolfo Ng in Academe and Dr. Harvey Uy in Research.

The chairman of the Board of Judges was Health Secretary Enrique Ona, whileother members of the Board in Community Leadership were Dr. Zorayda Leopando, Dr. Anthony Leachon and Tranquil Salvador III.

De los Reyes also received a plaque of recognition and appreciation from the PMA for her commitment and dedication as outstanding governor of Western Visayas during the administrative year 2012-2013, and also given in recognition and appreciation for her contribution to the advancement of the medical profession by sharing her experience as a leader for the association, and for the humanitarian service to Filipinos affected by Typhoon Quinta in December 2012 as chairman of the Committee on Emergency and Disaster in her region.*CGS
