A marine landing craft hired by Lopez-owned Energy Development Corp. and carrying 130 tons of relief goods, generator sets and other survival necessities, arrived at the Ormoc Pier Saturday.
The craft brought 500 sacks of rice, 30,000 liters of water, three units of 250 KVA generator sets, 800 solar flashlights cum phone chargers, medicines, and 40 solar street lamps.
The generator sets will be donated to the Ormoc City Hall, Ormoc City Hospital, and the Divine Mercy Hospital, and the solar street lamps to the barangays, the EDC said.
Nearly 40 tons of relief goods have already been distributed in Ormoc City and Kananga town in Leyte, after EDC was able to charter two helicopters and two planes. The company also arranged for cargo space from Cebu Pacific to support its relief efforts, and continues to airlift 10 tons of food each day, a press release from the company said.
The firm is coordinating with and complementing the efforts of national and local governments, like Leyte Gov. Dominic Petilla, Ormoc City Mayor Edward Codilla, and Kananga town Mayor Elmer Codilla. Relief goods are being packed at EDC’s head office in Manila, its geothermal project site in Negros Oriental, and the Cebu office of First Gen Corp., the press release also said.
Employees of the Bacman Geothermal Production Field are part of the search and extraction team to locate affected company workers, their relatives and other residents. All employees in Leyte are alive and accounted for, and those rescued were transported to Bicol, the press release added.
Meanwhile, Silliman University in Dumaguete City has endorsed to the Philippine Navy its first batch of donations of 13 tons of relief goods for typhoon-ravaged areas in Leyte and Samarfor shipment today, and SU thanked the donors.
The first batch of relief goods include 405 boxes and 76 sacks of assorted food items, 68 boxes and 152 sacks of assorted used clothing, 102 boxes of mineral water with 1,791 bottles, and three boxes of sardines, or 372 cans.
The school is appealing to kindhearted individuals to continue sending donations for the second batch of assistance in-kind for shipment on November 25, the press release added.*JFP
