Six schools, colleges and universities will compete in the Sandurot Festival of Dumaguete City Friday, a press release from organizers said.
The Sandurot Festival is a yearly event held in November as part of the city’s fiesta and charter day anniversaries, with contingents telling the story of Dumaguete through dance.
Shifting this year from being barangay to school-based, the Sandurot Festival participants are Asian College, Piapi High School, Negros Oriental HS, Silliman University, and St. Paul University-Dumaguete, the press release said.
The Festival traces the history of Dumaguete from the olden days when local maidens were snatched by moro pirates, and how the place finally got its name from the word “daguit”.
It also tells how, through the years, Dumaguete has embraced into its fold cultures, people, and lifestyles from foreign lands, and how, in a reversal of roles, “Dumaguete has been able to “daguit (snatch)” people’s hearts, enticing them to make Dumaguete their home, or just a place to come back to over and over again”, the press release also said.
Sandurot Festival has two highlights: the “Pasigarbo” or streetdancing at 4 p.m., that starts from Robinsons Place, and the “Pasundayag”, or grand festival showdown at 6 p.m., at the Quezon Park Kiwanis Stage.
The city celebrates its charter day anniversary on November 24 and its fiesta in honor of its patron saint, St. Catherine of Alexandria, on November 25.
Activities lined up for this year’s celebration include a farm family congress, fiesta fun run, sporting events and the Miss Dumaguete beauty pageant.*
