Fernando Arguelles of Bacolod City and Tony Rose Raymundo of La Carlota City led their respective teams with three gold medals each in 3rd leg of the Philippine Sports Commission-PHILTA Visayas Junior Tennis Championships held at the Montevista Tennis Courts in Bacolod City over the weekend.
Arguelles stamped his class on 16 and under boys singles by beating fellow Bacoleño Adrian De Hertogh, 6-3, 6-4, in the finals, then went on to rule the boys 18 and under against Raymark Marcellena of Dumaguete City, 6-0, 6-2.
Teaming up with Marcellana in the 18 and under doubles, Arguelles claimed his third gold in the tournament as they won via walk over against Enrico Gonzaga and Adrian Javier.
In the girls’ division, Raymundo replicated Arguelles’ feat as she won her three gold medals from the 16 and under, 18 and under singles and 18 and under doubles.
In all three events, Raymundo beat fellow La Carlota tennister Keanu Flores. She beat Flores, 6-4,6-4 in the 16 and under age-group and again in the 18 and under, 6-1, 6-2.
With Shyryn Salazar in girls’ 18 and under doubles, Raymundo grabbed her third gold medal as they dominated the championship the round against Flores and Rushlyn Cielo.
Clinching two gold medals each during the tournament where Reynan Mahusay and Pete Andre Rodriguez of Bacolod City, and La Carlota City’s Karl Baran, Valerie Desoyo, and Shyryn Salazar.
Rodriguez topped the 10 and under unisex event by outplaying Mika Medina of La Carlota City, 6-4, 6-2, in the finals. With Fernando Alekzander Po, Rodriguez claimed his second gold medal as they prevailed over Joseph De Asis and Joshua Raymundo, 8-3, in 10 and under unisex doubles.
Mahusay dominated the 12 and under boys’ singles by outscoring another Bacolod junior tennis player Caesar Fernando Po, 6-3, 6-4 in the finals.
Mahusay, partnering with Baran in boys’14 and under doubles, booked his second gold medal as they tamed De Hertoh and Po, 8-4 in the championship round.
Baran earlier dominated the 14 and under boys’ singles with a 6-3, 6-4 tally against De Hertogh.
Meanwhile, Desoyo emerged victorious in the all-La Carlota finals by besting Salazar, 6-1, 6-4, in the 12 and under girls’ singles and Kiana De Asis, 6-3, 6-3, in the 14 and under.
After absorbing defeat in the singles category, Salazar bounced back with two gold medals in doubles with De Asis in 14 and under with Raymundo in 18 and under.
The winners received their medals from Philippine Tennis Association regional vice president Juanito Cansino Jr. and Bong Arguelles during the awarding ceremony.
The next stop of the tournament will be in Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila on December 18 to 22.*NAB
