St. John’s Institute high school volleyball girls will defend the crown they won last year against perennial champion University of St. La Salle-Integrated School when the two teams face each in the NOPSSCEA semifinals, 2 p.m. Sunday, at the USLS Covered Court in Bacolod city.
The Peter Yusay-mentored SJI team, which topped Bracket A, secured a seat in the semis by trouncing Bracket D No. 1 team Trinity Christian School, 25-12, 25-13, while the USLS-IS girls of coach Malot Lozada earned the same ticket by holding off St. Benilde School, 25-9, 25-18 in the previous weekend’s schedule.
Tournament manager Efren Timtiman said winner in the SJI vs. USLS-IS match-up will advance to the finals with a twice-to-beat advantage.
Keeping their championship hopes alive are Sta. Teresita Academy, St. Joseph High School, Silay Institute and St. Scholastica’s Academy, who are also scheduled for a pressure-paced matches tomorrow.
STA will play against SJS-LS at 2:30 p.m. followed by the face-off between SI and SSA. Winner in the STA – St. Joseph match will face Trinity on Sunday at 8:30 a.m., while the winner in the SI-SSA game will face St. Benilde.
The team that will survive this weekend’s tussle will meet the winner between SJI and USLS-IS in the finals set on December 1, Timtiman said.
In the high school boys division, USLS-IS also managed to book a seat in the semifinals after defeating Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod in two straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, the previous weekend.
Standing on its way is St. Joseph School spikers who turned back Bacolod Tay Tung High School, 25-19, 25-21, to arrange a semis clash against La Salle.
The two teams will play for the first finals seat tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the winner earning a twice-to-beat advantage.*NAB
