NOPSSCEA VOLLEYBALL
USLS-IS, SJI HS girls up
for titular rematch

St. John’s Institute high school volleyball girls will defend the crown they won last year against perennial champion University of St. La Salle-Integrated School when the two teams face each in the NOPSSCEA semifinals, 2 p.m. Sunday, at the USLS Covered Court in Bacolod city.

The Peter Yusay-mentored SJI team, which topped Bracket A, secured a seat in the semis by trouncing Bracket D No. 1 team Trinity Christian School, 25-12, 25-13, while the USLS-IS girls of coach Malot Lozada earned the same ticket by holding off St. Benilde School, 25-9, 25-18 in the previous weekend’s schedule.

Tournament manager Efren Timtiman said winner in the SJI vs. USLS-IS match-up will advance to the finals with a twice-to-beat advantage.

Stingers vs. Rams game one
set today at USLS Coliseum

After a two-week delay, the scheduled best-of-three final series for the NOPSSCEA men’s basketball crown will finally unfold today as the University of St. La Salle Stingers play host to University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Rams, 5 p.m. at the USLS Coliseum.

The Stingers’ titular campaign will be bannered by their hardworking rookies and a taller lineup while the Rams are expected to give the series-opener their best shot after finishing first runner-up to the West Negros University Mustangs last year.

This year’s USLS – UNO-R championship showdown is reminiscent of the 1998 finals between both teams.

Junior Mustangs rout
Junior Rams, 96-74

Despite losing its bid for a 15th straight title in NOPSSCEA men’s basketball, the West Negros University remains in contention for a crown, this time in high school division, as the Junior Mustangs formally advanced into the semifinals last night by routing University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos’, 96-74, at the St. John’s Institute Activity Center.

But the rivalry between these two schools is not yet over as the young Rams still managed to secure a semis berth by earning a higher quotient against defending champion SJI and Bacolod Tay Tung High School after yesterday’s tussle.

UNO-R will play against Milo Passarelle regional finals first runner-up University of St. La Salle in the semifinals tomorrow at 9 a.m., while WNU will face Trinity Christian School in the other semis clash at 10:30 a.m.
