Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella delivered a check for P200,000 to one of the areas affected by super typhoon Yolanda in northern Negros yesterday, a press release from City Hall said.
Puentevella, with members of his administration went to Cadiz City to handover the check to Cadiz Mayor Salvador Escalante, who appreciated the gesture, the press release said.
"This donation is from the people of Bacolod to the people of Cadiz," Puentevella said. He also thanked the members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod and Vice Mayor Greg Gasataya for letting him be the city's "representative and instrument", the press release quoted him as saying.
Escalante thanked Puentevella and the city of Bacolod for the aid that will be used to give assistance to the affected areas and residents of Cadiz, the press release also said.
DONATED FROM ABROAD
Escalante also said they have been receiving numerous donations and relief operations, particularly from private individuals and schools in Bacolod since last week. Representatives from Korea, Japan and Spain also extended their help, as well as, Filipino citizens who are residing abroad, he said.
Escalante said next year's Dinagsa Festival will also be waived, although the church-centered Sr. Santo Nino Festival will continue.
Funds for the Dinagsa Festival will be allocated to help residents greatly affected by the super typhoon, especially to farmers and fisherfolk whose crops and pump boats were damaged or destroyed during the calamity, he said.
Cadiz also prepared for the onslaught of Yolanda and was able to evacuate more than 7,000 families out of harm's way. No casualty was also reported in the city, Escalante said.
Governor Alfredo Maranon, Jr. also assured him that the province will give financial aid to families whose houses were destroyed, he said.
Escalante said each household will be given P3, 000.
Puentevella said Bacolod will also donate P100,000 to Tacloban and Bantayan, the press release added.*
