Bishop: Join rally
against pork today

Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra yesterday called on Negrenses to join a rally led by the Diocese of Bacolod calling for the total abolition of the pork barrel fund, at the Bacolod public plaza this afternoon.

“We must speak out against this evil scandal that has robbed the poor of much needed government assistance,” he told the DAILY STAR.

Speakers at the rally will be election lawyer Romulo Macalintal, and Auxiliary Bishop of Manila Broderick Pabillo, national director of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines-National Secretariat for Social Action.moremoremore

Negrense lauded
for peace prize

Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday congratulated a Negrense, who is an official of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and other Filipinos who are members of the OPCW that is this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner.

“It is our great pride that a Negrense, Franz Ontal, head of inspector training of OPCW, is part of the organization that won the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize this year,” Marañon said.

“May Mr. Ontal's feat inspire Negrenses, and motivate others to pursue genuine advocacy work. Our congratulations to Mr. Ontal and the other Filipinos who are members of OPCW,” the governor said.moremoremore

crowned MassKara queen

A third year accountancy student of the University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City, dominated the MassKara Queen beauty pageant and bested nine other candidates Saturday night at the USLS Colliseum.

Candidate No. 2, Lady Ann Alquizar, 19, was declared MassKara Queen by Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella and also named Miss MKK Bacolod Ambassadress of Goodwill. She received P80,000 in cash and a trip to Korea as declared by the Mayor.

Alquizar, the Pasalamat Queen of La Carlota City last year, was crowned by Puentevella together with first lady Josefa Puentevella and ABS-BCN station manager Leilani Salem-Alba.moremoremore
