120 NegOcc brgys listed
as poll areas of concern

The military and police yesterday classified 120 barangays in Negros Occidental as “areas of concern” during the Oct. 28 barangay elections after reconciling their figures.

Of the 120 barangays, 35 were categorized as barangays of “greater concern” and 85 of “lesser concern”.

There are 662 barangays in Negros Occidental, including the 61 in Bacolod City.

Col. Jon Aying, 303 rd Infantry Brigade commander, said that they are also monitoring private armed groups, which may be tapped by unscrupulous candidates during the barangay elections. He, however, refused to identify them..moremoremore

93 dead in 7.2 quake

CEBU – A powerful earthquake killed at least 93 people in the Philippines yesterday as it generated landslides that buried homes, triggered stampedes of terrified people, and destroyed historic churches.

Fifteen of the confirmed fatalities were in Cebu, the country's second most important city and a gateway to some of its most beautiful beaches, the national disaster agency reported.

The 7.1-magnitude quake killed another 77 people in the neighboring island of Bohol, famed for its rolling "Chocolate Hills", while one other person died on nearby Siquijor, which attracts tourists with its pristine white sands.moremoremore

Leonardia activates
disaster relief team

Rep. Evelio Leonardia yesterday ordered the activation of his disaster relief operations team in response to the quake that hit Bacolod.

He also asked District Engineer Noel Pineda to check on all roads, bridges and school buildings to see if any of them had sustained damage.

Leonardia also asked the Department of Social Services and Development to stand by for any relief operations that might be needed..moremoremore
