Kumon commends 53
student achievers in WV

Eleven completers and 42 advanced students all over Western Visayas were conferred medals and plaques at the Kumon Advanced Students’ Forum 2013 held at the Planta Centro Hotel and Residences in Bacolod City Saturday.

Oliver Alvarez, section leader of Kumon-Cebu branch, said that students who joined the awarding were from three Kumon centers in Negros Occidental, three in Iloilo and one each in Aklan, Antique and Capiz.

The 11 completers have finished either the Kumon Math or Reading Program and the 42 students were given recognition for studying materials that are five or more years ahead of their school grade, Alvarez said.

In Negros Occidental, Kumon has three centers, namely, A Child’s Place Center, The Woodbridge Academy Center, both in Bacolod, and Locsin Center in Silay City, with about 300 students, Alvarez said.

Alvarez said Kumon, as a math and reading after-school supplemental learning program created in the 1950s, considers the individual needs of the student in academic advancement.

He also said, “A child who is already five or more years advanced in math and reading studies can do other things aside from academics since studying was made easy for them.”

Tadashi Nakatsuka, president of Kumon Philippines, in his speech before the awardees and parents, said the experience, learning, and confidence the students gained all throughout their Kumon journey will be useful, not only in their academics studies, but as they go through the next stages of their life.

Nakatsuka said that about 4.2 million students in 48 countries in the world are with Kumon. In the Philippines, there are about 55,000 students in 250 centers nationwide, he added.*SGG

Crucifixion chapel blessed

The newly constructed Crucifixion Chapel inside the church of the Parish of San Juan Nepomuceno in Brgy.Sum-ag in Bacolod City was blessed on Saturday with more than a hundred parishioners and devotees acting as sponsors during the ceremony.

Parish priest Fr. Anecito Buenafe Jr. said the image of the Crucified Christ inside the chapel was customized in Italy and was donated to the church in 1926 by the late Augusto Villarosa and his wife, the former Juanita Claridad.

To mark the 87th year of the generous donation to the parish, Buenafe said they tapped 87 sponsors for the chapel’s blessings. They also invited devotees and church benefactors to the ceremony to thank them for supporting the parish.

He added that the the Crucifixion chapel is just one of the several projects they are undertaking to highlight the historical and cultural heritage of the parish and the community in Sum-ag.*NAB
