Abaca fiber product display
to highlight Tourism Week

BY ADRIAN NEMES III

The display of abaca fiber products at the public plaza will highlight the Tourism Week celebration today of Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, Tourism officer-in-charge, Bernadette Ayala, said yesterday.

Ayala said the abaca fiber products were made by the Kabankalanon women, who belong to the Negros Nine and Catanghap Women’s Association.

She said Negros Nine, based in Sitio Bantoringao and Catanghap Women’s Association, based in Sitio Catanghap, both in Brgy. Oringao, will also receive P10,000 each in grants from the Kabankalan City government to further enhance their products.

Ayala also said the production of items made from abaca in Kabankalan is flourishing and, in fact, some of the products have already been exported to Australia.

The products to be displayed starting today until Friday are table covers, bags, shawls, wallets and lampshades, among others.

Aside from abaca products on display, a peanut farming conference through the One Town, One Product that is being assisted by the Department of Trade and Industry will also be held at the Kabankalan City Hall today.

Other activities in line with the Tourism Week celebration of Kabankalan are mangrove planting in Sitio Bagacay, Brgy. Daan Banwa, tourism quiz bee, on-the-spot painting contest, serenades, and band concerts.*APN
