The Livestock and Dairy Fair 2014 was highlighted yesterday by the distribution of P2.6 million worth of projects to beneficiaries by the Negros Occidental Provincial Veterinary Office.
Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena said P280,000 worth of compost from the Negros First Ranch and P524,000 worth of veterinary kits and drugs were given to paravets.
Decena said they also gave 560 piglets, all valued at P1.4 million, to local hog raisers associations, and P401,000 worth of kabir chickens and peking ducks to livestock producers.
Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said the livestock and dairy industry in the province continues to grow.
Marañon said other local government units, are, in fact, visiting Negros Occidental annually to observe its dairy and livestock production. The province is now the second largest dairy products producer in the Philippines as well, he said.
The governor added that the success of the dairy industry in Negros Occidental is evident, with the large production of Yogurt which the province is exporting to other areas.
Earlier this year the Philippine Carabao Center pledged to distribute 50 high-breed carabaos from Bulgaria to the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental.
Marañon said these carabaos are expected to boost the dairy and the cattle industry of the province.
He said they plan to inject the semen of these high-breed carabaos on the local female carabaos to increase their population.
Marañon, however, said he has no idea how much each carabao costs, because the provincial government is not paying with money, but will give the offspring of the animals’ to the Philippine Carabao Center to replenish what had been distributed.*APN
