A bamboo planting activity along the banks of Inolocan River, a major tributary of the Tanjay River, was held by community volunteers and officials of Barangay Simborio in Pamplona town, Negros Oriental, to start the construction of a 100-linear meter cable footbridge.
Bamboos planted along river banks and riparian zones are known to help prevent soil erosion, and help preserve the cable footbridge constructed in the area.
The footbridge, worth P4,003,733, was one of the prioritized community projects during the second cycle Municipal Inter-Barangay Forum of the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan–Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services, a Community-Driven Development program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Simeon Remata III of the DSWD-7 said in a press release.
He said there are three cycles in every Kalahi-CIDSS Project implementation, and community projects proposed by the communities of each town are deliberated and prioritized during the forum.
Part of the activity was a brief orientation on the Thematic Environment Management System to build up community resiliency in mitigating the effects of climate change and contributing to biodiversity protection, Remata said.
Officials and department heads of the local government unit supported the activity by providing the bamboo seedlings and planting materials.
The construction of the cable footbridge is expected to be completed in June, in time for the monsoon rains when flashfloods frequently occur in the area.*JFP
