The Ceres-La Salle Football Club settled for a scoreless draw against
Laos in the United Football League Division 2 Saturday match at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig City.
Laos was hoping for a second win against the Bacolod-based squad following its 1-0 squeaker in their first-round encounter on Feb. 1.
Breaks failed to swing for the Ceres-La Salle side despite consistent and greater ball possession opportunities, sending Laos to put up a strong defensive wall resulting in the scoreless match.
The draw gave Ceres an 11-3-1 win-draw-loss scorecard, enough to keep the lead with 36 points while Laos now has a 9-2-4 record and is running third with 29 points behind Manila Jeepney FC, which has 33.
Manila Jeepney registered its 11 th win against four losses with its 6-1 triumph yesterday over Union Internacional Manila (7-1-7) and is running sixth in the UFL second division.
Ceres-La Salle will see action in the league after two weeks -- on May 14 – against Dolphins United, which handed cellar-dweller Cimarron its 13 th loss in 15 outings.
It will represent the country in the Group B qualiiying of the AFC President's Cup in Bacolod City on May 6-10.
Meanwhile, Ceres FC spearheads the Negros Football League, a two-division tournament that will tap participation from teams based in the provinces of Negros Occidental and Iloilo.
Set to start on May 31 at the Ceres FC North and Mandalagan Football Field, the tournament will have the Open (Division 1) and the LGU (Division 2) categories with playing schedule on weekends.
To prepare the participating teams and as part of the league's commitment to develop football in the region, a workshop was held over the weekend with around 50 football coach and team managers in attendance.
To help the participants strengthen and develop football in their respective clubs, the workshop tackled issues such as organizational structure of the sport from FIFA down to the local clubs, coaches' plan, developing football through media partnership, strengthening clubs through good marketing strategies, and medical requirement for the club to keep players fit , among others.*
