Five Negrense farmers and a local farm council in Negros Occidental bagged the major awards at the 2014 Regional Gawad Saka Award of the Department of Agriculture in Region 6 held in Iloilo Wednesday.
Dina Genzola, senior agriculturist, said Hansel Montano of Brgy, Banog-banog in Isabela, won the Outstanding Corn Farmer Award, and Herminia Decaniel of Bago City was named Outstanding Sugarcane farmer.
The Outstanding Young Farmer Award went to Resty John Suerto of Barangay Binubuhan, Bago City, who is only 21, she said, adding that Rodelia Panganiban from Silay City was awarded for exemplary performance in Value Crops farming, while Sipalay City Farmc is the Outstanding Farm council. 


Crop production increases
under OURFood program
Crop production of farmers in Negros Occidental under the OURFood Program of the Association of Negros Producers and a German Foundation, has increase by 2 tons weekly, Marivic Rio, former ANP president and chief executive officer, said yesterday.
Rio said the increase is attributed to the awarding of the Good Agricultural Practices by the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Product Standards to three small farmers' organization recently.
Before the awarding of the GAP certificate, she said the farmers under the OURFood program can only reached 300 to 500 kilograms per week production..
