Two unidentified men shot dead a former barangay captain Saturday night in Purok Bagong Lipunan, Brgy. Dian-ay, Escalante City, Negros Occidental.
The victim, identified as Romy Romo Sr., 47, former Dian-ay barangay captain, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds, after the two suspects opened fire at him, in front of his nephew, at a sari-sari store, Supt. Leo Batiles, Escalante police chief, said yesterday.
Batiles said initial autopsy reports showed that the victim suffered about 10 gunshot wounds in his body, and was declared dead on arrival at the Alfredo Marañon Sr. Memorial Hospital in Brgy. Bato, Sagay City.
Initial police investigations showed that the two suspects are believed to have used revolvers, as indicated by the absence of empty shells at the crime scene.
The shooting incident took place a day after an encounter in Sitio Madrak, also in Brgy. Dian-ay, Escalante City.
Batiles, however, said he believes that the killing of the former barangay official had nothing to do with the gunbattle, and they are looking into personal grudges related to the agrarian reform problem as possible motive for the crime.
The encounter site is about seven kilometers away from the Dian-ay poblacion.
Batiles also said the two suspects fled on foot.*GPB
