A provincial consultation and workshop on the proposed One Negros, One Island region was held in Negros Oriental yesterday, attended by around 40 local government officials and representatives from civic groups, the business sector and non-government organizations.
           
The activity was spearheaded by the Negros Oriental provincial government of Negros Oriental, in coordination with the Department of Interior and Local Government under the auspices of the Negros Oriental Network of NGOs. Its aim was to come up with recommendations and resolutions on the proposal.
           
While majority of those present are standing pat on their early pronouncements against the proposed one island region, others agreed that it is still too early for a conclusive stand on the matter..

PENRO: No century trees
cut at EDC expansion site

The  chief of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Negros Oriental has assured that the trees being cut by the Energy Development Corp. in Valencia town are not centuries-old ones.
           
PENRO chief Charlie Fabre also said majority of these trees measure 20 to 30 feet in diameter, contrary to a news report quoting environmental advocates as saying  that they were centuries-old.
           
He said  as applied  the natural forest trees are inspected before  the being cut , as applied for by the EDC for its expansion project at the Southern Negros Geothermal Production Field in Valencia, Negros Oriental.

Winners in chess
competition named

The Negros Club 64 Inc. announced the winners of its 2nd Inter-leg Elementary Rapid Chess competition, in cooperation with the Department of Education, and the Negros Oriental Sports Development Program recently.

Tournament director Florendo Zamora said in a press release that Alfonzo Louis Olendo of the St. Louis School-Don Bosco in Dumaguete City won the 12 and Under Category of the 72-player province-wide event.

Olendo has six wins and one draw, and the only undefeated contestant in the competition. Second and third placers were Christer Mark Paculanang of the Bais City West, and Joseph Lawrence Diaz - Palinpinon Elementary School.
