Red Cross to mark
IHL Day tomorrow

The Philippine Red Cross will commemorate August 12 as the International Humanitarian Law Day, that aims to raise awareness on the four Geneva Conventions and other laws of armed conflicts, intensify the campaign against the misuses of the Red Cross emblem, and to rally people to advocate such laws and its importance, a press release from the PRC said.

The PRC Negros Occidental-Bacolod City Chapter will also hold a mural painting at its office at 10th Lacson Street, Bacolod City, on August 16-17, that will be participated in by various Red Cross Youth Councils in the province, the press release also said.

The IHL is one of the advocacies of the Red Cross, promoting respect for the life and dignity of those who are affected by armed conflicts, and reminding Red Cross members of their mission to alleviate human suffering, not only in times of war, the press release also said.

The observance of the IHL Month in August, on the theme “Promoting IHL towards Achieving National Solidarity”, gives emphasis on the general rules in armed conflict situations, like respect for each individual, and that persons out of combat and those taking no active part in hostilities shall have their lives spared, and be treated humanely.

For more details, those interested may contact the PRC at (034) 434-9286, or 434-8541, the press release added.*
