DOST helps lime quarry

The Department of Science and Technology has awarded a P1,975,000-loan grant to Rolly Javier of Javier Lime Quarry of Brgy. Andres Bonifacio, Sagay City, Francis Alan Daraug, DOST officer-in-charge, said yesterday.

The five-hectare quarry is producing 30-50 tons of agricultural lime and 5 tons of hydrated lime a day.

The assistance is in line with the DOST program to finance manufacturing sectors with the potential to produce in huge scales and the capacity to repay the loan in three years.

The funds will be used to buy lime kiln, hammer mill assembly, and sieve assembly to improve the manufacturing consistency of lime and to shorten the cooking process from 72 to 36, thus increasing production. There are now only 10,000 square meters being mined.

Lime is a versatile mineral of many uses, from the preparation of land before planting, to its use in sugar processing and refining for industrial use.

Lime prices differ as hydrated or industrial lime fetches P3,000 per ton, while agricultural lime is priced at P1,165 a ton.

DOST Officer-In-Charge Francis Alan Daraug said the quarry has a huge volume of deposit, roughly estimated to be depleted in 30 years.*MNM
