Bacolod City is considered the bastion of game fowl breeding in the country today, and is now a P50-billion industry, second only to the sugar industry as economic contributor to the province, Norie Bermudez of Pilmico said yesterday.
Income from the exported gamefowls is about P1 billion annually, she said.
Negros Occidental takes pride in having more than 1,000 gamefowl breeders, complimented by 1,000 backyard breeders, she added.
Gamefowl manager, Paul Tolentino, said Negros chickens are highly prized and that there is need for reliable products as cases of fowl diseases are rising.
He said Salto is a product of Pilmico Animal Nutrition Corporation, a subsidiary of Aboitiz group of company and is the newest feed brand to hit the market.
The name came from the jargon used by the aficionados to describe “fly high”, or, above and always on top of their opponent to execute a deadly clip.*MNM
