NOPSSCEA Season 34
to include girls' futsal

The Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Education Association has included futsal, a five-a-side soccer tournament mainly played indoors, in the list of sporting events when Season 34 opens on September 12.

Ericson Rios, assistant to the chair of the Committee on Sports, said yesterday that futsal is a demonstration sports at last year's Palarong Pambansa and it is expected to be a regular medal sports event in the annual school-based competition among elementary and high school athletes in the country.

Five teams from NOPSSCEA member-schools will compete for the inaugural girls' futsal title, Rios said.

He added that among other changes in the Season 34 is the new schedule for the college men and women's beach volleyball which will be played this semester instead in the second semester as observed in the previous NOPSSCEA season.

Competition in grade school arnis will be spiced up this year with the entry of athletes from The Twin Stars Learning Center in Bacolod, who will be competing against Bacolod Christian College, Rios said.

He said that for ball games, 45 schools will compete in basketball, 26 for football and 60 for volleyball.

This year's NOPSSCEA tournament managers are George Acot of Bacolod City – Basketball, Efren Timtiman of Negros Volleyball Federation – Volleybal, Dennis Estaniel of DepED and Negros Occidental Football Association, Jyan Rome Bascar of Carlos Hilado Memorial State College – Badminton, and Eddie Rodriguez of Pontevedra Tennis Club – Tennis.

Hosea Alvarez of Lopue's Table Tennis Association – Table Tennis, Edwin Subong of DepED – SepakTakraw, Tessie Ongkee of St. Scholastica's Academy – Swimming, Elena Roma of Negros Occidental Track and Field Association – Athletics, Harny Tabuada of DepED – Tae Kwon Do, and Bro. Mario Dacanay, FSC of USLS – Karate Do.

Edwin Llamo of National Chess Federation of the Philippines, is replacing the chess arbiter, Kim Dumdum, who died May 24, this year.

In this year's battle, member schools of the organization will observe the Department of Education's age cut-off. High school athletes must have been born May 15, 1997 or later, and on May 15, 2002 for elementary athletes, Rios said.*SGG
