Severino rules rapid chess tilt

Chess FIDE Master Sander Severino of Silay City won the 1st Piaya Network Negros Invitational Rapid Chess Championship held August 23at the Activity Center, The District, Ayala North Point in Talisay City, a press release from the tournament organizers said.

The tournament, sponsored by the newly launched Piaya Network, AV Negros Chess Club and First Community Bank through its president Lawrence Villanueva, adopted the 11- round Swiss System with 12 players contesting the top prize.

Severino dominated the tournament with a 10-1-1 win-loss-draw record. He took home the P5,000 cash prize and a gold medal, the press release said.

Ted Ian Montoyo of Brgy. Sum-ag in Bacolod City placed second and received P3,000 cash prize. He also won the Blitz side event and received an additional P1, 000.

Rodrigo Atotubo of Talisay City settled for third place and received P2,000 while consolation prizes of P500 each was given to the nine other participants.*
