A grand 54th
alumni homecoming

The energy was electric and everyone felt all the excitement and nostalgia as old classmates and friends met together again after so many years, during the celebration of Riverside College's 54 th grand alumni homecoming. This also coincided with the 60 th anniversary of Riverside Hospital, honoring the legacy of its founder, Dr. Pablo Torre.

The Ruby Jubilarians, Riverside Nursing Class '74, headed by their dynamic president, Paula Villanueva Gustilo, and vice president, Dr. Helen Villarico Correa, were feverishly busy for the last couple of months contacting their former classmates in the Philippines and abroad as far as Switzerland, Isle of Man and the USA. They wanted everyone to come and attend this momentous event. They were not disappointed as most of their classmates were caught up in the frenzy and excitement of seeing their old friends once again.

And so, on the big opening night of their homecoming, the guests who hadn't been home for a long time, were mesmerized as they entered L'Fisher's La Proa Ballroom, all dressed up in their stunning long red evening gowns, complete with blings shimmering under the light of the chandeliers. Everyone was smiling and kissing each other, glad to be home at last. The evening's festivities seemed like it wouldn't end as the stories they told seemed to go on forever.

The next few days were spent bonding with each other at Anne Seago's sprawling residence where the group enjoyed slumber nights. Their happy times were also spent at Sam and Sylvia Dioquino Baloco's cozy Swiss-place in Manville. There was a quick trip to Campuestohan resort, where the group indulged in girlish giggles and laughter while getting sunburned, but who cares – it was worth it anyway!

The afternoon ended with a side trip to Concepcion, gorging on the famous Concepcion lanzones which was an integral part of their memories of their youth in Bacolod. What a fabulous reunion to cherish f orever.*

Do you have an Ayco?

Paste Article HereA retrospective exhibit featuring the works of renowned Negros artist Jess Ayco, considered the “Father of Modern Art in Negros”, will open at the Balay ni Tana Dicang in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, on Nov. 14 and run until January.

The exhibit that will be part of the events lined up for the Visayan Islands Visual Arts Exhibition and Conference will be held in Negros Occidental Nov. 14-16, Dennis Ascalon, Viva ExCon exhibition head, said yesterday.

Ascalon said there will be three major exhibitions during the conference, with one designed to pay tribute to the works of Ayco, forerunner of modern art in Negros in the late 50s and early 60s.

The Ayco exhibit will be curated by Dr. Patrick Flores, curator of the Vargas Museum at the University of the Philippines in Diliman.

Documentation of Ayco works is in progress, Ascalon said.

The elder of the two sons of the late Leon Ayco and the former Encarnacion Ramos was known earlier as Jesus Ramos Ayco, but later changed the spelling of his name to “Aiko”.

He studied architecture at the University of Sto. Tomas, and Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines. He was an artist, stage director, and set and costume designer.

His works had won prizes in national competitions of the Art Association of the Philippines.

Those who possess works by Ayco, who would like to have them documented, exhibited and catalogued as part of this project, can get in touch with Adjie Lizares of the Balay ni Tana Dicang, he said.*
