Police bare cause of death
of ma, child in pension house
BY SHIELA GELERA

The mother and her daughter, whose bodies were found in a pension house at 11th Street in Bacolod City, last week, died from respiratory failure, or lack of oxygen, as shown in the autopsy results, the police said.

Lea Cañete, 34, died from lack of oxygen due to strangulation, while Hannah Kate, 3, had respiratory failure due to fracture of the neck and incise wounds on both wrists.

Senior Police Officer 3 Arlene Torrendon, deputy chief of the Bacolod Police Office Women and Children's Protection Desk, said yesterday that they now consider the case closed.

Text messages like the ones saying “sorry” and “goodbye” were also saved in the draft of Lea's cellular phone, Torrendon said.

She said Lea had been worried about her illness and feared that it could not be cured because they are poor.

The police believe that Lea planned the incident, based on the evidences and statements of her family members, Torrendon said.

Lea and Hannah Kate had been dead for about 10 hours, before a room boy of the hotel discovered them.

Their cadavers will be buried on Saturday, at about 1 p.m. in Murcia town, Negros Occidental.*SGG
