Batang Pinoy nat’l finals opens today

The 2014 Batang Pinoy National Championship kicks off today at the Paglaum Sports Complex with hundreds of delegates from local government units joining the 4 p.m. opening ceremony.

Participants are scheduled to converge at the Bacolod Public Plaza at 2:30 p.m. and the parade will start at 3 p.m. going to the Paglaum Sports Complex.

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella, along with Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco and Philippine Sports Commission chairman Ricardo Garcia are expected to give their messages at the opening rites.

A gymnast exhibition, MassKara dance, and fireworks display will cap the event.

Earlier, Puentevella said that the city government enjoys the full support of the provincial government in hosting the national finals of the Batang Pinoy or the Philippine Youth Games.

He said Bacolod City is fielding 261 athletes who are all medal contenders. The city had placed 8th overall in the Batang Pinoy 2013 which Bacolod also hosted early this year.

Quezon City topped the event with 29 gold, 22 silver, and 19 bronze medals, while Baguio City placed second with 22-18-10 gold-silver-bronze. Negros Occidental secured the third spot with 19-11-14 medal finish.

Cebu City ranked fourth with16 gold medals, 19 silvers, and 19 bronzes; Iloilo landed in fifth place with 13-0-4 count; Laguna tallied 12-7-16 for sixth place; Zamboanga City registered 11-13-18 at seventh place; Bacolod City with 8-14-29 for eighth place; Manila, 8-4-4 for ninth place; and Pangasinan with 7 golds, 19 silvers, and 20 bronzes for 10 th place.*NAB
