Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and sugar industry leaders yesterday welcomed the approval by the congressional bicameral conference committee of the Sugarcane Industry Development Act of 2014 with an annual appropriation of P2 billion.

“The approved Sugarcane Act is good for the industry, we thank its authors for it,” the governor said.

Hopefully, it will be signed into law by President Benigno Aquino with the P2 billion mandatory allocation annually, soon, Marañon said..moremoremore

‘Let Christmas truce
bring gift of peace'

Nine peace groups, including those based in Negros Occidental, thanked the g overnment and the Communist Party of the Philippines yesterday for the gift of a Christmas ceasefire.

“May the Christmas ceasefire bring the gift of peace,” they said in a joint statement.

Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. also said yesterday that he hopes both sides respect the ceasefire.

“Christmas is a time for sharing, giving and loving,” the governor said. moremoremore

Despite the announcement of the Communist Party of the Philippines that it will observe a suspension of military offensives during the yuletide season celebration, the Philippine Army is not lowering its vigilance, especially on December 26, which is the 46 th founding anniversary of the CPP.

Maj. Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero, 3 rd Infantry Division commander, challenged the NPA local leadership to prove their sincerity in the declaration of the ceasefire, saying that they have faithfully complied with it ever since.

The CPP will observe ceasefire on Dec. 24 to 26, Dec. 31 to Jan. 1 and Jan. 15 to 19.moremoremore
