Negros tops athletics,
Iloilo rules arnis

With a 13 gold, five silver and five bronze medals, Negros Occidental bagged the championship in athletics while Iloilo City had a 10-2-3 gold-silver-bronze finish to dominate the arnis competition of the 2013 Batang Pinoy National Championship at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.

In basketball, the Bacolod City bos' 3-on-3 team will play for the gold against Zamboanga, today, 1:30 p.m., while the girls' team from University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos will try to salvage the bronze against Laguna at 10 a.m.

Pangasinan claimed the second place in athletics with 3-6-6 tally while Baguio came in third with 3-1-1 finish.

In arnis, the Ilonggos rule the competition by winning 10 out of the 12 events and placing second in the two other categories.

Carystal Bartonico emerged as the most bemedalled girl athlete in arnis as she won all her six event to register a perfect game.

Bartonico claimed the gold in single weapon solo, double weapon solo, sword and dagger solo, and was part of Iloilo's trio that reigned in single weapon team, double weapon team, and sword and dagger team.

Her teammate John Carl Segutier won three gold medals from single weapon, double weapon and sword and dagger team events for boys, while Evan Jannery Pinas completed the 10 gold finish of Iloilo by topping the boys' double weapon solo event.

Mark Andrew Orcena of Rizal Province and John Lloyd Salazar of Aklan prevented a shutout for Iloilo as Orcena booked the gold in boys' single weapon solo and Salazar, the gold in sword and dagger solo.

Meanwhile, after the Batang Pinoy competition, gold medalists from Negros Occidental and Bacolod City are setting their eyes on winning the respective events in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association meet from Februay 8 to 13 in Antique.

The Negros' athletics team is set to leave for Antique on February 5 while the rest of the delegation will leave on February 7.

Negros Gov. Alfredo Marañon had earlier assured all medalists in the regional meet that they will receive cash incentives from the provincial government.*NAB
