Quest for athletics dominance
for Iloilo, Negros begin today

Iloilo’s bid to retain the athletics championship, in both boys and girls category in elementary division and boys in the secondary level, will start today as competition in the 2014 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association meet kicks off at the Binirayan Sports Complex in San Jose, Antique.

Out to challenge Iloilo’s title-retention campaign is the Negros Occidental athletics team, mostly composed of gold medalists from Bacolod City who had grabbed the limelight in the Batang Pinoy National Finals recently held in the city.

Up for grabs in Day 1 of the athletics competition are 17 gold medals with final events in elementary and secondary boys and girls’ shot put, elementary and secondary boys and girls’ long jump, elementary and secondary boys’ 110 hurdles; elementary and secondary girls’ 100 hurdles; elementary and secondary boys and girls’ 400-meter dash; and secondary boys’ 5, 000-meter run.

Also at stake today are seven gold medals in events for special athletes.

Elimination round for ballgames will also start today in different venues with Ioilo hoping to keep the title in both elementary and secondary arnis, elementary and secondary basketball, elementary baseball, elementary and secondary football, elementary and secondary sepak takraw, and elementary and secondary boys’ volleyball.

Negros, meanwhile, will be out to clinch its 20th straight WVRAA title with the combined strength of athletes from both private and public schools in the province.

The Negrenses also hold the team championship in elementary badminton girls, boys and girls’ chess, gymnastics, softball, boys and girls’ swimming, boys and girls’ table tennis, girls’ taekwondo, boys and girls’ tennis and volleyball girls; secondary girls’ athletics, boys and girls’ badminton, baseball, boxing, gymnastics, boys and girls’ swimming, softball, girls’ table tennis, boys and girls’ taekwondo, girls’ tennis, and girls’ volleyball.*NAB
