Majority floor leader Councilor Archie Baribar of the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod has filed a resolution recommending that all telecommunication companies increase their bandwidth, improve the extent of connectivity and WiFi density in the city in order to attract more businesses and to provide ease of access to information leading towards a knowledge-based economy, a press release from Bacolod City said.
The resolution states that the Philippine Digital Strategy 2016 created through public-private partnership sets forth as one priority of the government and all stakeholders, including telecommunication companies the goal to provide internet access for all.
The World Summit on the Information Society, convened under the auspice of the United Nations, upholds the right to internet access, also known as the right to broadband, and the view that all people must be able to access the internet in order to exercise and enjoy the rights to freedom of expression and opinion and other fundamental human rights, the press release said.
Aside from Metro Manila, Bacolod City is one of the top destinations for BPO companies and has been named as Center Of Excellence For Information Technology And Business Process Management in the Philippines.
