Pope installs Quevedo, 18 new
cardinals in Vatican ceremony

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis appointed his first batch of cardinals yesterday, as his predecessor Benedict made a surprise rare appearance at the ceremony naming the new "princes of the Church".

The new cardinals were presented with scarlet-red birettas and gold rings at a grandiose ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica that Vatican observers say should help correct a perceived bias towards European cardinals.

Nine of the 19 cardinals appointed came from South America, Africa and Asia, including Cardinal Orlando Quevedo of the Philippines.

TAGBILARAN CITY – President Benigno Aquino III will inspect the progress of rehabilitation efforts in Bohol province today.

He will also conduct an ocular inspection of the bunkhouses and of the Loon hospital after his arrival at the city airport at around 1 p.m.

The construction of bunkhouses with comfort rooms, dirty kitchens and faucets is funded by the government for the 100 internally-displaced families in Loon town, Bohol, due to the 7.2-magnitude earthquake on Oct. 15, 2013.
