Around 6,000 turned up at the Macias Sports Center in Dumaguete City yesterday morning for the prayer rally initiated by the Diocese of Dumaguete in observance of February as Pro-Life Month.

People from all walks of life including priests, religious, lay faithful, students, the academe, civic groups and church-based organizations attended the prayer rally, that was also aimed at calling for a more cohesive action plan by the community to help address criminality in Dumaguete.

The participants brought placards that bore slogans about respecting and protecting life, rejecting the Reproductive Health law, and shunning activities against the teachings of the church.

Manual counting of election returns in the first district of Negros Oriental is expected to start soon after the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal ordered the collection of ballot boxes from the Commission on Elections provincial office.

The electoral protest was filed by former congressman Jerome Paras, who lost to incumbent Manuel Iway, in the 2013 elections.

Paras claimed inaccuracies and discrepancies in the results of the elections due to problems experiencedby the Precinct Count Optical Scan machines, and the only way to determine the truthfulness of the results is through a recount of the ballots cast, he said.

‘Community help needed
to curb criminality’

Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria and police chief James Goforth appealed for strong community support and participation to help curb criminality, amid rising public criticism and fear over the perceived unsafe environment prevailing in Dumaguete City.

Both admitted that the police and the city government cannot do the task of maintaining peace and order and reducing criminality in Dumaguete City by themselves.

They said an increased crime rate is not unusual for a growing city with an increasing population and other considerations, so the cooperation and participation of the community are needed in crime-fighting.
