Deaths from vehicular accidents in Bacolod City last year went down by 30.2 percent compared to 2012, records from the City Police Traffic Management Unit showed yesterday.

Sixty-three fatalities from vehicular accidents were recorded in 2012, and 44 from January to December last year, Senior Police Officer 1 Dennis Perma, TMU chief investigator, said yesterday.

Of the 44 casualties last year, 26 were motorcycle-related, Perma said.

He said there was a decrease of 27.8 percent in the homicide cases from motorcycle accidents last year, compared to year 2012, with 36 fatalities.

Most of those who died from motorcycle accidents were not wearing helmets, or were under the influence of alcoholic liquor, Perma said.

The area at Lacson Street, from the flyover in Brgy. Bata to Rolling Hills Memorial Chapel in Brgy. Mandalagan; Araneta Street, from Transcom to Manville in Brgy. Pahanocoy; and at Alijis Road, from Banga Alijis to Paglaum Village in Brgy. Mansilingan, were among the accident-prone areas noted by the TMU.

There was nothing wrong with the roads as most of them are already equipped with traffic devices, Perma said, adding that human error is usually the reason for the accidents.

He said the placement of concrete median traffic islands at Araneta Street from Teletech to Government Service Insurance System in Brgy. Tangub, has contributed to the reduction of accidents there.

He also said one of the factors for the decrease in the number of motorcycle accidents in the city is that most drivers are now taking more precautions.

However, the TMU reiterated to the riding public that they should not drive when drunk, always wear protective helmets and do not over-speed.*SGG
