A labor group has demanded that the .6 percent employee premium increase of the Social Security System that took effect Thursday be suspended indefinitely, claiming that it is unjustified and grossly detrimental to the interests of the members of the state pension fund.

Two days before the year ended, the Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino warned the public that the Aquino government shall punish his “bosses” with more wage deductions such as the SSS and PhilhHealth contribution increases and a wide array of price hikes of basic commodities in welcoming the New Year, the group said in its press release.

The BMP said the government’s justification for the premium increase is illogical. How can the SSS go bankrupt when it has more than 30 million members and increasing?

‘Yolanda’ survivors
get P1.6 million

The Department of Labor and Employment in Negros Occidental has released P1.6 million in salaries for the second batch of typhoon Yolanda survivorswho were employed under the agency’s Emergency Employment Program and International Labor Organization, Ma. Victoria Mondragon, said yesterday.

Mondragon, who is the DOLE provincial head, said they hired 366 typhoon Yolanda survivors from Manapla town and the cities of Sagay and Cadiz on December 13.

She said they were hired to help clean up the debris left by the typhoon, repair school facilities, and declog canals in their areas.

PVO to strengthen
support for raisers

The provincial government of Negros Occidental will strengthen its support to backyard hog raisers this year by providing additional animal-raising technology and breeder stocks among others, Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena, said yesterday.

Decena said 85 percent of the sow population in Negros Occidental are backyard raised, thus, additional technology and other forms of support is necessary for the raisers.

He said there is also an increased demand for pork products coming from nearby provinces especially with the depletion of the pig population due to the recent super typhoon.
