| BCPO: 2,892 crimes
noted in 2013
The Bacolod City Police Office recorded 2,892 crimes in 2013, acting city director, Senior Supt. Edgardo Ordaniel, said yesterday.
He said 1,496 of those were index crimes, like theft, robbery, physical injury, carnapping, homicide, murder, rape and castle rustling, and 1,396 were non-index crimes, such as illegal drugs, gambling, loose firearms, and violation of special laws.
Ordaniel said there was an increase in crimes recorded last year compared to 2012, because police stations were directed by the PNP national headquarters to include all kinds of crimes, even those under the barangay, and traffic accidents, in the report.
He said theft was the most rampant crime last year, followed by robbery, physical injury, carnapping, homicide, murder and rape.
The highest number of crimes was recorded in September with 530, with the lowest in May at 98.
Crime-clearing efficiency, or cases where the suspects, both arrested and at-large, were identified and charged, increased by 5.66 percent, compared to the same period in 2012, he added.
Meanwhile, Insp. Roger Ong, officer-in-charge of the City Police Traffic Management Unit, said they recorded 6,247 accidents last year, or about 6.9 percent higher than in 2012, with 5,844 accidents.
Ong said the rise in traffic accidents could be attributed to the increase in the number of vehicles on the streets, especially motorcycles, that can be owned for as low as P3,000.
He said human error and heavy traffic congestions were among the causes of accidents.
Of the 6,247 traffic accidents, 1,338 were motorcycle-related, Ong said, adding that an increase of 17 percent in accidents involving motorcycles was noted last year.
Homicide cases due to vehicular accidents dropped by 30.2 percent, or 44 fatalities last year, compared to 63 in 2012, Ong said.*SGG back
