Bais asked to regulate
dolphin watching tours
BY ALEX PAL

Scientists are asking the Bais City government to conduct a study on the impact of cetacean watching activities on the dolphins and other marine mammals in the Tanon Strait, and set maximum limits on the number of tourists and boat trips on a daily basis.

Dr. Lemmuel Aragones, associate professor of the University of the Philippines Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology, Liana Talaue-McManus, Mary Anne Roque-Borigas, Apple Kristine Amor and Edward Keith, made the suggestion in anticipation of the proliferation of the cetacean watching activities in the Tanon Strait, a protected seascape.

The suggestion was made after a number of boats offering whale and dolphin watching tours from Bais City alone reached 14, as cetacean-watching activities reached their peak in 2007 and 2010.

SP to seek clarification
on funds pull-out
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Oriental yesterday threw their support behind Gov. Roel Degamo after learning that at least four funding allocations from the national government amounting to millions of pesos were withdrawn for unclear reasons.

The SP members, led by Vice Governor Mark Macias, expressed surprise on this, saying they had no idea about it and had only heard from the news media about the funds withdrawals.

The governor was referring to the P481-million disaster relief funds earlier promised by President Benigno Aquino III through the Department of Public Works and Highways, the P100 million for the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital through the Department of Health, the P16-million for the hospital in Guihulngan City, and infrastructure projects through the Department of Agriculture, plus two tractors as counterpart from the national government.

2 ‘pushers'
arrested in buy-bust
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Anti-illegal drugs operations continue without let-up in Negros Oriental and two suspected drug pushers were arrested over the weekend.

A third suspected drug dealer, however, managed to escape during a buy-bust operation in Tanjay City, an hour's drive north of Dumaguete City.

Police reports showed that a certain Isidro de la Cruz Salma, of legal age and a resident of Polo, Tanjay City, fled on his motorcycle Friday while a buy-bust operation was underway by joint operatives of the Tanjay police, the Provincial Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Group and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.
