Vendors at the Bacolod City downtown area and around the Bacolod North Public Market at Burgos Street started to demolish their illegal structures yesterday, while others asked for extensions until Wednesday.
Rey Demisana, acting head of the Bacolod City Legal Enforcement Team said only stalls measuring 1 meter by 1 meter should be permitted and those exceeding that should be demolished.
He said most of the structures they inspected yesterday exceeded that and are also obstructing pedestrian lanes.
Demisana added that they are giving them until Wednesday to correct their violations otherwise the CLO enforcement team will destroy their stalls.
Jimmy Maselag, president of the Burgos Vendors Association, said they are supporting the move of the city government to clear the main thoroughfares of illegal structures.
Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella, together with the Enforcement Unit of the City Legal Office and the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office, inspected the different sidewalks in the downtown area and the three public markets of the city yesterday to determine the compliance by the sidewalk vendors with the one meter by one meter space allocated them.
Puentevella started the inspection of the downtown area at about 2 p.m. yesterday and held a meeting and dialog with representatives of vendors associations to urge them to comply with the program of the city government.
Last week the, CLO enforcement team also cleared the area around the Libertad Public Market of illegal structures.
Ambulant vendors will be advised to return to their barangays to sell their goods and not at the city's main thoroughfares.*APN
